The narrative around foster care often centers on heartwarming reunifications or adoptions—stories that end with “happily ever after.” What about those who turn eighteen and age out of care and did not experience what many view as being the “picture perfect” ending? Meet Eric who after years of living in foster
care, went on to build a very meaningful and celebrated life.
ERIC DAVIS
As a former foster youth who was never adopted or placed with a traditional family, I was blessed to have a chosen family that showed up for me, and challenged me to become the man I am today. That family included case managers, therapists, independent living specialists, a guardian ad litem, and so many others who chose to care.
I was fortunate to build, and be supported by, a system of individuals who truly cared about my well-being and genuinely wanted to see me succeed. Without those connections, I wouldn’t be the man, student, leader, or parent I am today.
I’m incredibly grateful for the new connections I’ve made as I continue to challenge the system to do better and be better.
To those providing direct service and care to youth in foster care: thank you. Thank you for showing up, for staying in it for the right reasons, and for committing to the work without being attached to the outcome. Your dedication matters.
To the youth, regardless of your experience, if only you knew how far you’re capable of going. The heights you’ll reach are beyond your wildest dreams, fears, or imagination. Tap into your resources. Defy the stats. Break the stereotypes. You define you. Labels are for jars, not people. You are worthy—and you always will be.
Love is all there ever was, is, and ever will be.
